Blame the Recession

Jealousy is probably the ugliest emotion. You are never so petty as when you're fueled by jealousy. You become obsessed; every quality about her is just another reason she's totally wrong for him. You even go looking for these reasons: secretly reading their conversations and looking at her pictures (fucking Facebook!), torturing yourself endlessly until you can finally find a flaw and say "ha!" But in the end, you're the pathetic one, aren't you? Because even now, he's probably with her, and you're left alone in your conviction and bitterness. And when he comes to you for help, confessing his doubts, don't celebrate too soon! It may seem like his relationship is failing, but even these little triumphs are only rejections in disguise. Soon enough, he'll be back in her arms, and you'll know she has won again. You've been pushed into the backseat of his romantic life, and you'll probably be stuck there forever, watching helplessly as he picks up girl after girl, each more awful than the next. Maybe at first, you'd only ever wanted to be his friend anyway, but now, friendship seems like nothing more than a consolation prize. Because through it all, even if you know him better than all his collective girlfriends combined, you're still painfully aware of always being held at arm's length.
